NORFOLK SOUTHERN 1601-1605 Built 1951, center mounted intake grille, turbocharger bulge on firemans side, Mu hoses mounted on uprights of front and rear handrails, numberboard on front of long hood combined with class lights, body painted vermillion with a yellow stripe which ran all the way around the body, three red stripes on the long and short hoods, one centered on the larger yellow stripe. Road name in black was in long hood in the yellow stripe. Road number in black was on cab on the yellow stripe, Walkways, top of hood and running gear were black. Bells were mounted on front of long hood.
In the late 50's the 1601 and 1602 were repainted in a solid vermillion paint scheme with NS medallion on cab with road number under on the battery box.

NORFOLK SOUTHERN 1606-1610 Built in 1952, otherwise same as 1601-1605. There was an intermediate paint scheme, the yellow stripe on the cab was eliminated, a NS medallion added and the road number moved down to the battery box in yellow. Probably done about the time the 1601 & 1602 were repainted into the all vermillion scheme.

When the GP-18's were purchased in 1963 an all new paint scheme was introduced. The entire body was gray, top if hoods, cab walkways and running gear was black. Red stripes in a "V" fashion were applied to the front of both hoods. Units 1601-1605 were not repainted having been put in storage. The remainder were repainted in the new scheme beginning in the mid 60's. 1606-1610 were sold in 1974.

NORFOLK SOUTHERN 1611-1613 Built in 1954, otherwise same as 1601-1605. Sold in 1974.

NORFOLK SOUTHERN 1614-1615 Built in 1954, otherwise same as 1601-1605. 1614 was wrecked in 1964, 1615 was sold in 1974.

NORFOLK SOUTHERN 1616-1617 Built in 1955, had General Electric equipment and tall hoods that were flush with top of cabs. Both were sold in 1974.
