SKETCHES OF EARLY SOUTHERN RAILWAY CABOOSES

This sketch shows the "Bobber" type cabooses built by the shops of the Southern
beginning around 1897 or so and numbered X421-X446.  The X-60 and possibly others
were built with a center cupola and only 2 windows.  They were about 20' long.
These were all wood construction.  Some of these were operated into the 20's. 

This sketch shows the 8 wheel side door built by the Southern shops beginning around 1901. These had no end doors and the cupola was toward the end. They were numbered X704-X1093. They were all wood construction and around 37' long with truck centers of 21'-22'.

This sketch shows the 8 wheel side door built by the Southern shops beginning 1914-1917. These had end doors with a centered cupola. Some may have had side doors and some didn't. They were numbered X2026-X2425. They were all wood construction and around 37' long with truck centers of 21'-22'. These were rebuilt around 1927 and the side door was eliminated. They kept the same numbers.

This sketch shows the 8 wheel 4 window type built by the Southern shops beginning 1922. These had end doors with a centered cupola. They were numbered X2426-X2875. They were all wood construction and around 37' long with truck centers of 21'-22'. These were the last wood cabooses built by the Southern.
